The Intra-Company Transfer Permit lets a multinational move existing employees from an overseas branch into its Irish operation without recruiting locally, which makes it the natural route for standing up a new Irish site, transferring specialist knowledge or filling a senior gap fast.

10Questions on file
Q01How long must the employee have worked for us abroad?

Transferees generally need a minimum period of prior service with the group before the transfer, commonly at least six months, evidenced by the overseas contract and payslips.

Q02Is a labour market needs test required?

No. Intra-company transfers are exempt from the labour market needs test, because the transferee stays employed by the overseas group company. You instead prove the group relationship and the person's existing service.

Q03Does this route lead to permanent residence?

It is designed for temporary assignment, but time on it counts: ICT holders can apply for Stamp 4 after 57 months of employment, subject to the conditions in force at the time.

Q04How long can the transferee stay?

Key staff can generally be assigned for up to five years, with permits typically issued for around 24 months at a time. Trainee assignments are shorter and tied to the structured programme.

Q05What causes ICT refusals?

Refusals are usually structural: the link between the sending and receiving entities was not evidenced. We include an ownership chart, accounts and the transferee's overseas contract and payslips from day one.
