Q01Can any foreign licence be exchanged?
No. Exchange applies only to licences from the EU, EEA and states with a recognition agreement. We confirm your country's status before you apply, and where it is not recognised we set out the full learner route instead.
Q02Will I need to sit a driving test?
No. If your licence qualifies for direct exchange you sit neither a theory test nor a driving test, you simply convert it to the Irish equivalent.
Q03How long can I keep driving on my foreign licence?
Once Ireland becomes your normal residence, meaning you live here at least 185 days a year, you are expected to exchange a recognised-state licence rather than continue on the foreign one.
Q04My licence has expired, can I still exchange it?
An expired recognised-state licence is generally exchangeable up to one year after expiry, and only with an original Letter of Entitlement from the issuing authority. We help you request that letter in good time.
Q05Will I get a manual or an automatic Irish licence?
Exchanges from many Australian states and Canadian provinces produce an automatic-only Irish licence unless you can prove you passed a manual test. We flag this early so you can gather the evidence to keep full entitlement.
