Assess your reason to apply

We confirm you have a valid reason recognised by the Department of Social Protection, such as a signed job offer, college enrolment or a claim for a benefit, since the reason is what most applications turn on.

08Questions on file
Q01Do I need a PPS number before I start work?

You can start work without one, but your employer needs it to register your job with Revenue, and until it is on file you are taxed at the emergency rate. We move quickly so the number lands before your first payslip is finalised.

Q02Is there a fee to apply?

No. A PPS number is issued free of charge by the Department of Social Protection. Anyone charging to obtain one, or selling appointment slots, is a scam or an unnecessary middleman.

Q03Can I apply before I arrive in Ireland?

No. You must be living in Ireland and able to show a genuine, current reason, such as employment or study here, before a PPS number can be allocated. We prepare everything in advance so you can file as soon as you land.

Q04What if I do not have a verified MyGovID?

A basic MyGovID account is enough to start the online application. Where your identity cannot be verified digitally, we book an in-person appointment at a PPS allocation centre and prepare your documents for it.

Q05Why are applications most often refused?

The commonest cause is a weak reason to apply. A signed job offer, college letter or tenancy in your name is far stronger than a general statement that you have moved to Ireland, and we make sure your evidence proves the need.

Q06How does emergency tax get corrected?

Once your PPS number arrives and your job is registered with Revenue, the correct tax credits apply and any over-deducted emergency tax is refunded automatically through payroll.
